Apollo, Mousaios and the Muses

Athenian red-figure neck amphora with twisted handles (Nolan), dated to ca. 475–425 BCE, attributed to the Peleus Painter and the Polygnotan Group, per J.D. Beazley. The vase was excavated at Vulci (Etruria) and is now part of the British Museum collection in London, inventory 1847,0909.7 (E271).

Side A shows a musical ensemble of three named figures:

  • Terpsichore, Muse of dance and music, sits playing a magadis (harp), dressed in long-sleeved chiton and crown.
  • Mousaios, the mythical bard, stands with a chelys lyre and laurel staff, crowned and cloaked, gazing at Terpsichore.
  • Melousa, a lesser-known or symbolic Muse, in Doric chiton, holds a pair of auloi (pipes), testing one’s mouthpiece with her finger.

Above Terpsichore hangs a horse-shoe-shaped lyre, completing the musical context.

Side B depicts a woman flanked by two draped youths with staffs, one wearing a wreath – possibly representing a votive or poetic ritual.

This amphora reflects the ideal of divine inspiration in the arts, linking Apollo’s cult and Musical paideia in classical Athens. The careful line work, inscriptions, and musical imagery exemplify high-classical red-figure artistry.
