Museum Replica of a Red-Figure Kylix (Type B), dated between 500 and 450 BCE and attributed to the vase painter Douris, based on his signature inscription on the vessel. The kylix was discovered in Etruria, in the region of Cerveteri, a significant Etruscan center of trade and cultural exchange with ancient Athens.

Douris was one of the most prominent representatives of red-figure vase painting in the early 5th century BCE, renowned for his fine line work and narrative skill. This particular work bears his signature: DOURIS EGRAPSEN, ensuring the authenticity of the attribution.

On the interior (tondo) of the kylix, a young man is depicted standing in front of a laver, with a stool, staff, sponge, and aryballos (a small vessel for perfumed oil) suspended around him. The scene alludes to personal hygiene and the everyday life of Athenian youth, likely within a gymnasium or palaestra setting.

The exterior decoration of the kylix is divided into two registers (sides A and B), both dedicated to the education (paideia) of young men. On side A, seated, draped men are shown — one holding a staff, the other a scroll with an inscription. Several youths also appear in various poses: one seated with a lyre, another with a kylix, while suspended objects such as a pipescase, lyre, scrolls, and a basket indicate an environment of intellectual and musical cultivation. In a separate scene, a man is shown seated, playing the lyre, enhancing the sense of a refined and cultured learning atmosphere.

On side B, the theme of education continues: a seated man with a staff oversees a group of youths — one holds a writing tablet, another plays the pipes, and a draped youth stands nearby. Additional suspended items include scrolls, a lyre, a bag, and another writing tablet, emphasizing the importance that Douris placed on scenes of daily instruction and musical training, with a strong focus on space organization and the student-teacher relationship.

Of particular interest is the inscription:
MOISA MOI AMPHI SKAMANDRON EURROON ARCHOMAI AEIDEN,
a variation of a Homeric verse meaning:
“Muse, about the swirling Scamander I begin to sing.”
This poetic reference directly connects the imagery to the literary and educational world of the era.

The kylix is currently held in the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities) in Berlin and stands as a quintessential example of the interplay between art, education, and daily life in Classical Athens.
