ATALANTE EROTES

Athenian red-figure lekythos with white ground, dated to the early Classical period (ca. 500–450 BCE), attributed to the vase-painter Douris. It is now part of the Cleveland Museum of Art collection.

The central figure is Atalanta, the mythical heroine, depicted in motion, turning back while holding a wreath in her right hand. She is surrounded by three winged Erotes, flying around her and offering wreaths, sprigs, and floral elements. Their wings are meticulously detailed, with rows of feathers rendered in dilute glaze and fine outlines, exemplifying Douris’ delicate style.

Atalanta wears a long chiton and himation, richly decorated with patterns of dots, spirals, and rosettes. Her expression is focused and intense, and her flowing garments enhance the dramatic dynamism of the scene.

Inscriptions in Greek accompany each figure:

  • "ΑΤΑΛΑΝΤΕ" above Atalanta's head
  • "ΕΡΩΣ" near each of the Erotes

The subject is extremely rare, possibly unique: no other surviving vase shows Atalanta pursued or flanked by so many Erotes. This may symbolize an erotic or allegorical pursuit, combining myth with ritualized love imagery.
