This amphora belongs to the characteristic Nikosthenic “Louvre” type, with a narrow neck, balanced proportions, and strong visual storytelling. It is a key example of early red-figure painting featuring Dionysian themes and theatrical intensity.
On the main side (side A), a satyr attacks a maenad who wears a leopard-skin chiton and brandishes a snake, possibly as a ritual item or weapon. Her posture is defensive, capturing the tension between wildness and resistance. The reverse (side B) depicts a similar scene, with a satyr wielding a branch and a fleeing maenad.
The neck of the vase features two seated women, likely maenads, tying their sandals, surrounded by suspended musical instruments and cloths — a motif suggesting a sacred or personal ritual of adornment.
The handles are adorned with crowned youths, perhaps athletes or celebrants, holding wreaths and branches, emblems of honour and festivity. The entire composition exudes the ritual drama and sensuality of Dionysian iconography, rendered with refined movement and narrative detail.
