APOTHEOSIS OF HERCULES (HERAKLES)

Athenian red-figure pelike, dated to ca. 450–400 BCE, attributed to the Kadmos Painter, according to Beazley. The vase was found in Vulci, Etruria, and is currently housed in the Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich.

The main side (A) depicts the apotheosis of Herakles, his divine ascent to Olympus following his cremation on Mount Oeta. The beardless Herakles rides a chariot, accompanied by Athena, while nearby satyrs and maenads carry hydriai, possibly referencing ritual cleansing. A corslet lies atop a pyre, with a tree behind, reinforcing the funerary and initiatory symbolism.

The figures are inscribed, identifying:

  • ATHENAIA (Athena)
  • HERAKLES
  • HYBRIS and SKOPAS (satyrs)
  • ARETHOSA and PREMNOSIA (women with hydriai – possibly nymphs or personifications of springs)

The reverse (B) shows dancing satyrs and maenads, including one satyr with a thyrsos and a seated maenad with a wreath. Some scholars suggest the presence of Kore (Persephone), adding a mystical undercurrent to the Dionysian scene.

The composition reveals lively rhythm, narrative layering, and expressive detail — typical of the Kadmos Painter. The myth is rendered as a transition from hero to god, merging ritual, heroism, and deification into a unified visual narrative.
