PATROKLOS AND ACHILLES

Athenian red-figure cup, dated to ca. 550–500 BCE, using the outline technique in the interior. The cup bears the signature of the potter Sosias (SOSIAS EPOIESEN), confirming its production in one of the pioneering Athenian workshops of the late Archaic period. It was found in Vulci, Etruria, and is now housed in the Antikensammlung, Berlin

The interior tondo presents Achilles tending to the wounded Patroklos — both figures are named by inscriptions. Achilles, wrapped in a cloak, kneels over Patroklos, who lies with one leg injured, receiving care. A tripod and shield rest nearby, symbolizing either a military or ritual context.

This scene is remarkably intimate and emotional, diverging from the typical heroic depictions of the time. It reflects tenderness and loyalty between the two companions, rendered with the softness of outline drawing, a subtle but expressive technique that enhances the introspective tone.

The exterior scenes (A and B) show the gathering of gods on Mount Olympus, including Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Ares, Aphrodite, Hebe, Iris, Artemis, Hestia, Hermes, Dionysos, the Horae, and Amphitrite. These divine figures provide a mythic framework for the heroic devotion of Achilles to Patroklos, elevating the inner scene to the level of divine narrative.
