APOLLO AND LYRE

Athenian red-figure cup type B with white ground, dated to ca. 500–450 BCE, attributed to the Manner of the Pistoxenos Painter (according to Mertens) and alternatively to Euphronios (according to Bloesch). The cup was found at Delphi, within the sanctuary of Apollo, and is now exhibited at the Delphi Archaeological Museum, as a unique example of the Apollonian theme rendered in white-ground technique.

The tondo shows Apollo seated on a folding stool, holding a lyre and pouring a libation from a phiale toward a crow, his sacred bird. He wears a laurel wreath, long chiton and himation in reddish tones. The scene is delicate and solemn, reflecting Apollo’s musical, prophetic, and purificatory aspects, particularly associated with his sanctuary at Delphi.
