Athenian red-figure lekythos, dated to 475–425 BCE, attributed to the Achilles Painter, one of the foremost vase painters of the Classical period, renowned for his composed and dignified figures. The lekythos was found in Eretria, Euboea, and is now part of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
The scene depicts a young horseman, riding calmly and gazing toward a funerary stele to the right. He wears a short chiton and cloak, and holds the reins of his horse, which is rendered with naturalistic grace. The horse moves in a composed manner, creating a solemn, ceremonial tone.
The stele likely commemorates a fallen comrade or symbolizes the youth’s own heroization. The image carries strong funerary connotations, evoking remembrance and honor, while also reflecting the idealized citizen-soldier ethos of Classical Athens.
The style is marked by elegant simplicity, controlled movement, and clarity of line. The use of red-figure on white ground enhances the austerity and emotional subtlety of the composition, which belongs to the attic funerary repertoire of the 5th century BCE.
